Understanding the people of autism.

An ASD Awareness Zine.

This self–initiated project focused heavily on my aspirations to spread awareness surrounding the social injustices and misinformation of neurodiversity. As an autistic designer, this project’s scope enabled me to not just design for autistic people, but about them too.

The core aims of this brief was to create a tactile zine and fold–out poster that challenges the stereotypes of autism whilst also educating around the subject. By using risograph printing and typographic collage, I wanted these juxtaposing elements between the high contrast imagery and lower-toned scrapbook type to have a suitably readable, yet authentic and challenging outcome for the sensory needs of neurodivergent audiences. Whilst the sentry awareness of the project was incredibly important, it was just as significant to vocalise the message with impact, contrast, and character.

Through showcasing autism’s great range of opportunities and abilities, I depicted the wide spectrum through inspiring creatives, intellects, and innovators, where their differences in navigating life provided this informative publication an empowering message.

I want this zine to encourage those to embrace their identities for simply who they are. Autism is brilliant, powerful, and can in fact make a change. That’s what I aim to do, as many others do as well.

Aims and ambitions.
