aims and ambitions.
This second year undergraduate brief encouraged me to design and animate an opening title sequence for a film or television series of my choice, in which I chose Raging Bull (1980). Whilst keeping to a 15–30 second time frame, it was important for me to focus on key themes and visual elements of the final film in order to construct an appropriate sequence.
The decision to go with such an illustrative, rotoscoped animation style depicts the vivid and extreme messages of the film in a real and authentic format. With an effective and provocative representation of the violent masculinity, rage, and self-conflicting tragedy apparent in the film’s narrative, the final sequence developed into an outcome that captures the essence of the film in a cohesive and dramatic nature that suits the tone of voice. Raging Bull still stands today as not only one of the all time cinema classics, but as a product that vocalises the injustices of gender equality and domestic violence.
